Biography

TIMOTHY NOLAN is an NYC-based playwright, actor, and teacher. He received his MFA in playwriting at the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University and was a 2013 Indie Theater Now Person of the Year. Plays include Stuck With Fred, Acts of Contrition (FringeNYC Excellence in Playwriting award), The Sugar Plant, What Happened Was, What’s In A Name (Samuel French Critics’ Choice award), The Way Out (FringeNYC Excellence in Acting award), and The Bull Ring (Samuel French Critics’ Choice award). Stuck With Fred

Hilly wants a friend, needs a friend, but the best she can do is Fred… thirty years older, irascible in the extreme, in poor health and a fellow recovering alcoholic. He’s not an easy friend. But neither is she. When his health takes a turn for the worst and his brother shows up to run interference, she finds out just how much of a friend he is.

Cast:
Hilly (30s, female) a fragile recovering alcoholic and aspiring writer. She finds connecting with other humans nearly impossible. The only person she finds herself seeing, despite her better judgement, is Fred. In the end she discovers that what separates us from others can also be what connects us. Fred (late 60s/early 70s, male) is irascible in the extreme, and at times can be extremely difficult to be around. Fred is a recovering alcoholic who, like Hilly, finds it nearly impossible to be around people. He’s impatient, confused, frustrated, lonely, regretful. He’s estranged from his family and pretty much the rest of the world… except for Hilly. Martin (70s, male), Fred’s brother, who appears on the scene when Fred’s health takes a turn for the worst. Tension (not the good kind) between him and Hilly from the first, and he’s not too fond of Fred, either.
E Minor Seventh

Man starts to play a song he remembers from high school, reminds him of Woman, who taught it to him when they were sixteen. Neither knew how to be with the other, him being shy and awkward, her being in an unstable living situation. Before they can figure out how they really feel, she has to leave. When he goes to find her many years later, he finds an awful truth.

• Man, mid 20s, musician. Lonely, nostalgic, regretful. • Woman, early 20s, musician. Lonely, troubled, awkward.
What Happened Was

Liz wants to see the right thing happen for her friend Martha, who says she was raped by another friend, Mark. She’s been told to stick with the facts, but when she talks to her friends she finds the “facts” may not take her where she needs to go. She has to decide in a moment whether to follow the facts or the truth, and then live with the consequences.

The Sugar Plant

Tami is married to Michael and wants to continue being an expressionist painter. She met Michael, a teacher, at her first big opening and fell in love. But to stay married she will have to reveal things she vowed never to reveal. She must choose between the husband she loves and the work that keeps her alive. Her choice will tell her things about her work and her love that she may not want to learn.

Mighty Good Company

Isabella wants to honor family tradition. She often calls on the wisdom of her ancestor Julia, who rests in the cemetery that Isabella tends to. She’s also looking out for her niece Anna. When the cemetery is put up for sale to developers, she must choose between money her niece needs and her connection with her beloved relative. The costs of her decision will affect three generations of women.

Acts of Contrition

Steve, Tom, and Joe, best friends since their days in the Catholic seminary, want to enjoy a beach holiday away from their priestly duties. When Steve is late in arriving, he reveals that he’s been ordered by the Cardinal to reveal his history as a sex abuser to his friends under the seal of the confessional, in order for all of them to continue to “keep each other’s secrets.”

Cast:
 Steve, 30’s, a priest and a rising star in the Church; he is a protégée of the Cardinal.  Cardinal, 60’s, has been a church leader for probably too long a time; he has made many moral compromises and is finding it harder and harder to live with them.  Tom, 30’s, a priest and friend of Steve’s, a high school teacher and firebrand willing to take on the hierarchy  Joe, 30’s, a priest and friend of Steve’s, bit of a hero worshipper, a parish priest who relies on his faith to protect him.
What’s In A Name

Susan Price just wants a good night’s sleep. But forty years of the same nightmare have forced her awake. Each night she dreams that she signs her name using her real name, Aileen Doherty. Susan has lived for forty years as a fugitive, having been conned into a bank robbery while she was a student radical. She has a grown son who has never known the truth. She’s held the line for this long, but which day will be the breaking point?
