Biography

Sophie Gilbert teaches advanced writing and literature for the College Connections Academy, located in San Jose, CA. Her teaching career spans thirty-one years, including two years as a teacher trainer in the Philippines as a US Peace Corps Volunteer. She acted in various roles during three seasons of the Woodward Shakespeare Festival in Fresno, CA, as well as various roles for Lighted Window in San Jose. The Other Side of Despair is her first play as a playwright. She transitioned from male to female in 2014.

A chance meeting with her evangelical sister in a cemetery sends the lead character, Sabrina, on an emotional journey through her own past. She battles depression and suicidal thoughts, revisiting a variety of transphobic demons with familiar faces. Ultimately, Sabrina searches through darkness to find what might be waiting on the other side of despair.
