The Forgotten Healer

The Forgotten Healer is an autobiographal play about Dr. Emma Wakefield-Paillet (Louisiana's First African American Woman Doctor (1897).   Dr. Wakefield was refused this honor until today as she was said to "not have practiced medicine".   It was not until Dr. Phebe Hayes, Univeristy of Louisiana-Lafayette professor researched and found a very small ad Dr. Wakefield put into the Times Democrat in New Orleans, Louisiana.   On November 3, 2018 the State of Louisiana will be erecting an offical historical marker in New Iberia, Louisiana in Dr. Wakefield's honor.  The play tells the story of growing up in the Deep
South during Reconstruction.  With Emma's father one of the first black Senators in Louisiana his family is doing well until his youngest son's encounter with a white merchant.  A lynching happens and the family is banished from New Iberia and heads to New Orleans changing Emma's life forever.
