"Metaphor is inseparable from human language and conceptual thought. The use of metaphor appears in our earliest stories; the first writing about it appears in Aristotle, who wrote, “Metaphor consists in giving the thing a name that belongs to something else.” [...] Metaphors transfer and transmit meaning." - Lisa Timmel

Theatre often leaves room for audience imagination in a way that film and TV don't. This makes it particularly fertile ground for the inclusion of metaphor. In this seminar with Philana Omorotionmwan (18-19 Jerome Fellow), we'll explore how extended metaphor(s) (that compare characters and/or entire worlds) can contribute to the theatricality of your play and how to find the metaphor(s) that best serves your characters and story.

This is the Seminar for you if:

  • You are interested in the power of metaphor in story
  • You want to discuss rhetoric in plays
  • You curious about symbols and motifs in plays
