FEEDING THE FURIES

A drama queen wife and her tyrannical husband collide with their feminist daughter and gay son in this hilarious and biting satire about the price we and others pay when we are untrue to ourselves. Ruthie Furie marries a “good provider” rather than risk financial uncertainty and social disapproval by remaining single and pursuing her dream career. She becomes an unhappy, passive-aggressive wife and mother whose deludes herself into believing she made the right choice. She craves a “normal” family but her husband Marty’s a misogynous bully and their precocious children, Mindy and Robbie, are misfits at home and school. To keep up the appearance that her family’s normal, Ruthie denies Marty’s abusiveness and advises her children not to say anything that makes the family look bad. Mindy and Robbie see through Ruthie’s hypocrisy and confront both parents’ patriarchal attitudes towards normalcy, self-identity and family. Ruthie gradually becomes more assertive with Marty, who responds by becoming more contemptuous. Ruthie appears to get her revenge after Marty has a stroke and she takes control. But it turns out she’s been pulling the strings all along, and her duplicity becomes her undoing.
