OPPORTUNITIES

Directors, Dramaturgs, & Designers (Ongoing)

Reports to
Playwrights’ Center Artistic Staff
Contract
We are always excited to get to know directors, dramaturgs, and designers here in the Twin Cities. Opportunities arise throughout each season, so please feel free to send a resume and either a statement of process (dramaturgs) or a link to an online portfolio (directors/designers). Please note that rehearsals are typically held on weekdays between the hours of 9am and 5pm, so some daytime availability is necessary for consideration. Materials may be emailed to hr@pwcenter.org.

Playwrights’ Center casts over 300 roles a year with Equity and non-Equity actors. Actors are critical to the success of the 55-60 play development workshops we do each year. Playwrights’ Center seeks actors to participate in development workshops. After our general auditions, we will update our database of actors to be considered for workshops. We contact actors throughout the year to cast individual workshops. Most workshops are between 10-25 hour contracts. Almost all workshops are held on weekdays in the morning and afternoon. Please do not request an audition if you do not have daytime availability.

General Auditions for the 2026-27 season to be held October 22-27, 2026

Please read the following carefully before requesting an audition.

Playwrights’ Center supports playwrights through the development of around 60 new plays each year, and seeks Minneapolis/St. Paul area actors with daytime availability to be considered for these workshops. We are looking for local actors to cast throughout the year on a rolling basis in individual workshops. After general auditions, we will update our database of actors to be considered as roles come up. Most workshops are between 10-25 hour contracts, and almost all are held on weekdays during the day. Please do not request an audition if you do not have at least occasional daytime availability or are not local to MN.

Both Equity and non-Equity actors in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area are encouraged to audition. If you auditioned last year, or have participated in a workshop in the past two years, we welcome you to reach out and say hello to express interest in the season, but we’d like to prioritize this round of general auditions for actors that are new to our community or haven’t recently worked with us. You are welcome to send updated headshots or resumes for us to keep on file.

At this time, we are not accepting virtual submissions. If you are a local MN actor but are unable to attend in person on these dates, you are welcome to send your headshot and resume to be kept on file, or send an invitation to check out your work throughout the season as opportunities arise.

Auditions will be held on the following dates in the Rehearsal Studio at Playwrights’ Center, 710 Raymond Ave in St. Paul. Please note that we will now be seeing people on Tuesday, October 27, as well.

Tuesday, October 27, 2026, 10am – 4pm (lunch break 12:30pm – 1:30pm) AEA and non-AEA

Jared Zeigler, Casting Manager and Associate Producer, will be in the room for all auditions.

*If all slots during your preferred time are full, please write with your availability and ask to be put on a waitlist.

Note that we are not casting for specific roles or projects at this time. After we have seen your audition, we will keep your information on file and be in touch if a role opens up that we think you are a fit for.

To request a 5-minute appointment slot, please email casting@pwcenter.org with your availability during these audition windows. Please also attach your headshot and resume with your full name included in the document titles (as an example: Firstname_Lastname_Headshot.jpg, Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf). Please only include .jpg and .pdf files to ensure that we can open your materials.

Upon arrival, please enter through the front door on Myrtle Ave to the large glass atrium and check in in the main lobby. If you have any access needs that could help support your audition, please let us know with your appointment request. AEA members must bring proof of AEA membership. You will be asked to read one of the provided sides (see below). Printed copies will be available at check in. Please do not memorize the sides in advance.

If you would like to read the play that the excerpt is taken from, please email casting@pwcenter.org.

PLEASE NOTE: These sides are for audition purposes only. None of the plays represented below will be workshopped this season. You are welcome to choose any of the following sides, even if they don’t necessarily match your age, race, or gender. Feel free to choose a monologue that pushes your artistic boundaries. At the same time, please be mindful of the intended casting wishes as indicated by the playwright. We will have printed copies available for you. Please choose one side to read—if you would like to choose a backup as well you may; in rare cases we may ask to see a second read.

Praise for the Apprenticeship Program

The Playwrights’ Center Artistic & Administrative Apprenticeship has without a doubt shaped my trajectory in the arts. I made invaluable connections with playwrights, artists, and the PWC community that have fueled and nourished me to this day. This apprenticeship really was a unique opportunity for me to learn how to facilitate spaces for creative development, and hone a plethora of skills that come with that. Even more, Playwrights’ Center modeled to me what a community-centered and social impact-driven organization looks like, and set me on a path to engage with other organizations and artists with the same dedication and drive. The Playwrights’ Center staff (family, really) is a remarkable group, and I recommend the apprenticeship to anyone looking to get a start in artistic administration.

I entered my internship at Playwrights’ Center with a vague desire to work with theatre texts and left knowing my future career. It was at the Center when I realized “this is what I want to do with the rest of my life.” The greatest part of my time there was meeting the amazing artists and staff, creating connections that I still maintain. My time at the Center opened new doors in my career and my community.

Our apprentice was assigned as “stage manager” but the thoughtfulness and completeness of her notes made me feel like she was a co-writer. She expanded my possibilities in the workshop by being such a reliable and smart collaborator in the room; it was wonderful to be accompanied by someone paying this kind of attention to every level of what was happening.
