Playwrights’ Center’s public season is only one piece of the holistic support that the Center offers to playwrights, but it serves as an opportunity for the writers we are currently supporting to share their work with audiences, and as an opportunity for theater-lovers to gain access to some of the most exciting new plays.
RUTH EASTON NEW PLAY SERIES
One of the most generous new play development opportunities in the field, the Ruth Easton New Play Series has sent more than half of its plays on to full productions around the world. This season’s playwrights will workshop their plays with a hand-selected team of collaborators, and bring audiences into the artistic process over the course of two staged readings.
IN THE LAB
The Center’s In the Lab series celebrates experimentation and pushes theatrical boundaries, providing a safe space for playwrights to test new ideas in front of an audience.
FRIDAYS@4
This season marks the return of the popular Fridays@4 series, inviting audiences deeper into the new-play development process by offering play readings accompanied by programming curated by the playwright.
ARTISTS IN CONVERSATION
Over the course of the season we invite audiences into conversation with artists, offering unique, behind-the-scenes insight into playwrights, their work, and the new play development process. Participants are invited to go “off-script” to candidly share their thoughts on craft, the field, and the world.
PLAYLABS FESTIVAL
PlayLabs is a can’t-miss event for theater leaders and new play enthusiasts in the Twin Cities and across the country. Three playwrights partner with teams of artistic collaborators for an extended workshop of exciting new plays. We invite audiences into the development process through two in-person readings of each play.
PlayLabs will resume in 2027!
