Biography

Donald E. Baker writes historical plays that provide context for today’s American experience and other plays on the themes of racism and gay life. He has long been fascinated by the story of Ku Klux Klan dominance of Indiana in the 1920’s and two of his plays on that subject have been produced. Trade With Klan, on the choices forced on ordinary people by the Klan, received a full production by Southwest Theater Productions in Austin, Texas, in January-February, 2020 and has been published by Next Stage Press. A radio adaptation of his play Grand Dragon in Power, about the downfall of the Klansman who ruled Indiana, was performed by Radio Theatre Project in St. Petersburg, Florida, in March, 2018; the play itself received a staged reading by Panglossian Productions of Williamsburg, Virginia, in November, 2020, and has also been published by Next Stage Press.

Baker also writes shorter works. His monologue Intestate: A COVID-19 Monologue, was presented online by Talking Horse Productions (Columbia, MO) in May, 2021; and live by Magnolia Arts Center (Greenville NC) in February, 2022, where it was voted “audience favorite.” It was published online by some scripts literary magazine, Issue 4: “Outbreak” (July, 2021).

Two other monologues, Ice Box Cake and the Man from Lima  and The Boys Across the Street  were produced online by Stage Left Theater (Spokane WA) in 2021 and 2022 respectivly. His short play I Invited Your Mother for Thanksgiving, was produced by Chapin Theatre Company (Chapin SC) in 2022.

Baker’s plays may be found online on his website https://www.playsbydonaldebaker.com/, at the Playwrights’ Center, or at New Play Exchange at https://newplayexchange.org/users/13449/donald-e-baker.

Published by Next Stage Press (https://www.nextstagepress.com/bakers-dozen/) from which script copies and licensing may be obtained.
