Biography

Nicole M. Young has been a practicing artist for over 20 years working in various media including theatre (performer, playwright, director, producer), poetry and classical music. She received a Bachelor of Theatre Arts from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Management from Wayne State University and a Master of Arts in English from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. As an actor and playwright, Nicole has trained with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada and Ping Chong and Company. Nicole's writing fills the spaces and completes the absences for those who tend to be invisible in mainstream media, especially women of color. While her poetry is autobiographical, Nicole's plays focuses on the unique relationships that can develop between people if they'd thought to listen to one another. She wants her work to explore the gaps between human interaction as an attempt to prove that we can all get along and respect one another.

Her play, get (t)his!, received a 2009 James Baldwin Memorial Playwriting Award from the Five Colleges Multicultural Theater Committee and has since been produced in Michigan and New York City. Nicole has read her poetry in several venues across New England and in Michigan. Originally from Detroit, she currently resides in Western Massachusetts.
