Interested in submitting your work?  The Walnut has supported writers at all steps of the creative process - from inception and staged readings to completion of full world premiere productions.  

If you have written a play or musical that you feel is appropriate for Walnut Street Theatre's Mainstage or Independence Studio on 3, please send the following:

PLAYWRIGHTS

Submit online or email us with:

  • A copy of your script
  • A brief explanation of the specific growth or next step you are looking for from production at The Z. (Ex. a script-focused workshop with rewrites, a staged reading with rehearsals to work on the script, feedback from audiences reactions etc.)
  • Any production timelines, team members or additional details already in place

The Z: Fringe Festival

Festival dates: April 5-6, 2024

Festival selections for Performance and Visual Art will be chosen by random lottery after screening to make sure they meet the guidelines.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • Plays should be unpublished, unproduced, and no more than 20 pages in length. Playwrights should only submit one script. 
  • All playwrights are responsible for assembling their casts and creative teams; this is an unpaid, non-union opportunity.

SOUND BITES ELEVEN seeks 10-minute musicals

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • Submissions won’t be considered after the deadline.

  • Musical theatre writers can only submit up to two scripts.

  • The story must have a beginning, middle, and end. Each musical must be ten minutes long maximum. Cuts will be made if accepted. 

  • We also accept submissions in foreign languages or that are bilingual. Although the application process is still in English, the work itself may be submitted and performed in any other language if selected. 

  • Each piece must include music.

Fringe Site-Specific Show Application

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • For this program, we are seeking theatrical productions/performances presented at unique locations that they are specially adapted to work within rather than having been designed for a traditional performance venue.
  • Locations could be museums, stores, bars, cafes, hotels, community spaces, parks, warehouses, etc.
  • These performances should be designed to be in direct relationship with their specific locations.
  • The participation fee is $925, for which site-specific Fringe participants get:
    • 100% of the box office

PROTOTYPE 2025: Digital Opera Open Call

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • All submissions must be original compositions.
  • The music in your digital piece must be primarily opera-theatre, multidisciplinary or new VOCAL music. Digital pieces with solely instrumental music will not be considered.
  • Interactive, participatory videos are welcome.
  • Works-in-progress will be considered if they are close to completion.
