Biography

Niki Hatzidis is an actor and award nominated playwright based in New York City. Her first full-length play she co-wrote, Steel Birds, was nominated for two New York Innovative Theater Awards; Outstanding Premiere Production of a Play and Outstanding Original Full-length Script. Niki has had one-acts and short plays featured in various festivals and readings in New York City, California and the UK. She is a writer and producer of The Beautiful Work Challenge podcast and a writer on Standby, a sketch comedy podcast by DimlyWit Productions. She is a features writer in OnStage.com. A Pulitzer Prize winning author has hauled up in a cabin with a couple confidants in order to help her complete her second novel. It becomes clear that not all is how it seems when her husband arrives unexpectedly.

From 1943-1945, women from all over the country followed their husbands to a secret compound in the middle of New Mexico, with the promise that they would have a hand in ending the war abroad. In the early hours of July 16th, 1945, five women sit on a porch in Los Alamos, looking towards the southern horizon, waiting to see... something.

All are mid to late 20's CELIA: A wife, a mother, has a chemistry degree but is not allowed to work on the project. She is tired of living on the mesa and is bitter and considered about what the project has done to her husband and their relationship. HENRY: A scientist on the project. He is engrossed in his work but believes the gadget will bring about the end to all wars. DOT: The mesa's busy body. She knows about all the goings on. Cheery and jolly soul. A wife and mother of three young children. GRACE: The newest wife to the mesa. She is polite, good-natured and optimistic. Newly married. JOAN: Poised and proud. Her husband just got a higher clearance and she wants everyone to know it. She organizes the gatherings and events on the mesa. MARION: Very pregnant. Quiet. She was a secretary to a high clearance scientist. Might know more than she lets on.

Jake and Val are each other's person, but the both are too scared and broken to make the leap into the vulnerable it take to be in an honest relationship. Life get's in the way, they get in their own way and things are always complicated.

VAL: Mid- late 20’s female. She is extremely clever and sarcastic. Deadpan. She has had a troubled passed, being a vagabond and recovered drug addict. She has trouble being vulnerable and has never really gotten over her failure in coping with the pressures of being an academic prodigy. JAKE: Late 20’s- early 30’s male who works in marketing. He has lead a sheltered, upper class life. He is charming and quick witted, which has helped him succeed in all aspects of life, but fears getting truly close to women. DENISE: late 20’s- early 30’s female. Upper class, confident and successful lawyer. Naturally condescending. WAITRESS: Early 20’s female. Keen and eager waitress on her first day working at a New York City cafe. HANK: Early- mid 30’s arts podcast host. The proud and doting fiance of Val. MOM: Voice of middle-aged Greek immigrant female. . DAD: Voice of middle-aged Greek immigrant male.

Colin O'Connell: Early 30's, MA cop. Charming and witty. Is helplessly in love with Angela. Molly's brother. Ryan O'Riordan: Early 30's, a MA cop rising up the ranks. He plays by the rules.
