This play tells the story of an elderly German couple (Wolfgang and Helga Zehlendorf), who have an upper class pedigree, but who have fallen on hard times in their homeland. For this reason, and for other reasons, they decide to come to America to visit their daughter (Kirsten McKenna) and her family (husband, Leo, and their children, Manny and Sandy) for an indeterminate period. Kirsten had left Germany for America some 20 years previously and has become thoroughly Americanized. Leo has a working class background, which Kirsten has adjusted to perfectly well. The relationship between the visitors and their hosts begins promisingly enough, but soon deteriorates badly, apparently because of the class, cultural and age differences, though there is, throughout, a suggestion that something darker and more sinister is at play. Leo’s best friend (Michael Avalon), and, to a lesser degree, his wife (Jeannie), play a major role in the story, acting as a buffer between the contending parties. Leo’s childhood friend (Jerry Wilson, an addict) also affects the relationship between the parties. Ultimately, the relationship between visitors and hosts breaks down completely and the suggestion that something dark and sinister was really at the root of the discord is revealed to be a terrible truth.
