The Shahrazad Society

Six storytellers, all female, meet in a secret space to convene The Shahrazad Society. Its mission is to read and share stories forbidden to them by authorities elsewhere. Drawing on classic tales like Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, Ali-Baba and the Forty Thieves, and The Fisherman and the Djinni, the storytellers refine the tales to highlight heroines, and change the endings to reflect their worldview. Defying the danger they are in, each member vows to find other forbidden stories that the society can “make their own." The story ends with the promise of another evening of storytelling, another evening of freedom. The Shahrazad Society won the Aurand Harris Memorial Playwriting Award.
