SAMPLE SHORT STORIES

I started writing and performing short stories to improve my memory and feed my artist soul, after I sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in 2005 and the idea of writing plays was completely overwhelming. Recently I produced Zoom Stories with Marie Cooney & Guests when the Coronavirus pandemic hit. Prior to that, I was a first time producer at the MN Fringe 2019, where I invited 17 people to join me in performing stories over five nights of different topics and guests. In addition, I have performed with the Twin Cities MOTH at the Amsterdam Bar and at the Parkview Theater, with Word Sprout at Strike Theatre, with Story Club Minneapoiis at Bryant Lake Bowl, with OUTspoken at the Red Stag, at the Golden Thyme in St. Paul, and at other locations.  I also hosted two shows about Women and Brain Injuries for KFAI Radio during two International Womens Day celebrations.

  • Caught! Caught in the Web of His Own Making! is about challenging a college professor regarding his condesending treatment of the tenth century nun and playwright Hrotsvitha.
  • Nikki, Tori & Grandma is about being with two teens during their last visit with their grandmother at Hospice, and about creating a healing ritual with Nikki.
  • Listen Frank! is about standing up to a hands-on chef, when I was in my twenties, long before the Me Too movement.
  • Thomas James is about taking a wee little lad under wing, teaching him to swim, and encouraging him to accept himself.
  • Four Footed Furry Friends asks the age old question if people are exclusively dog people or cat people and if it is possible to merge two households with different pets.
  • Excrutiating Pain is a humerous public survice announcement about experiencing sudden and excrutiating pain that suddenly went away. Once in returned, an immediate trip to the ER was necessary and I was seen right away because of the Kidney Stone Dance I was performing, unknown to me but recognized immediately by the medical staff.
  • Let's Be Decedent! is about teaching a second grade student silver dollar words. Unfortunately, he discovers not everyone appreciates his growing vocabulary.
  • Adventures in Sailing is about a typical day of teaching people to sail, but then needing to call the U.S. Coast Guard immediately after passing the Aerial Lift Bridge beyond Canal Park in Duluth, MN
  • My Irish Grandmother's Soda Bread is about making Coronavirus Comfort Food that doesn't need yeast, which is sold out at most stores. This story had over five hundred hits across the USA and Ireland when I first shared it on Facebook!
  • Tucker Taugh Me... is a series of short stories about lessons I learned from my service dog after sustaining a Traumatic Brain Injury.
  • Work Comp Sucks! is a story I deliberately wrote and included in a blog with Lask & Associates Publishing after reviewing creapy surveillance footage and reading invasive reports about me, my life and friends.
  • Learning to Love Life, Again is the story I submitted to the anthology Can't Someone Fix What Ails Me? which is 21 stories of living with chronic illnes that was published by Nikki Abramson and Barbara Hynes-Tomezyk in 2020.
