Obie and Mary Kipper arrived in Minneapolis in the early 1950’s, ready to join the many black families establishing lives in Minnesota. These Thy Gifts takes place in 1956. Obie is working at the Post Office.  Mary is finishing work at the University so she can teach elementary school. Their son Tyler is part of a close-knit group of black baby boomer kids. Obie wants to move to a better neighborhood. But that neighborhood, despite being less than a mile from their present one, is red-lined and Real Estate agents won’t sell homes to black people. But they will sell to Jewish people. So with the help of friend and fellow worker Abraham Kaplan, a plan is devised to buy the house. Despite protests from their wives and Tyler, two dangerously close calls convince all involved to go ahead with the plan. The Real Estate agent falls for the plan and the house is now the Kippers’. But within 24 hours of moving in, there is danger and aggression and their American Dream turns into a nightmare.  The Kippers and Kaplans come together to fight the fury, but the future?
