SEMINAR DESCRIPTION

Satire exposes the shortcomings of social, political, or societal systems. During ever-changing political climates, satire is an opportunity to look at the world through a different lens. During this seminar, students will engage in writing exercises inspired by discussions and a lecture on satire.

This Is the Seminar for You if You:

• Are a playwright, new or veteran, interested in writing satire. 
• Are a comedy lover.

What to Expect:

• To discuss the purpose of satire in our current moment
• Learn the tenants of satire
• Walk away with the start of a satirical play and/or further writing of a current satirical work.

NOTE FROM LAUREN

Satire is a popular genre to write, but I often find that writers know what they want to satirize, but struggle to write satire that actually takes aim at what they are criticizing. Satire should aim at those in power and systems, not those who lack power. Successful satire creates conversations, inspires empathy, and even evokes change. 

 

INSTRUCTOR BIO

Lauren Wimmer writes about loneliness, fear, and death in ways that make people say, "hahaha."

Her plays have been produced or developed at Cave Theatre Co., Dixon Place, Sewanee Writers' Conference, Panndora Productions, The Tank, Play by Play, The Dramatists Guild, PlayGround-NY, Imaginarium Theatre Company, Kennedy Center's American College Theatre Festival, Theater For The New City, Swarm Artist Residency, The Workshop Theater, Campfire Theatre Festival, Ars Nova's ANT Fest, Theatre Evolve, The Annoyance, Theater Masters, The Bechdel Group, Possibilities Theatre Company, and Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company.

Lauren's a member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. She's been a Playwrights’ Center Core Apprentice, Resident Writer with A Collective Artists, and Sitka Fellow. Her work's been published by Samuel French. Additionally, she’s been a semi-finalist for the Princess Grace Award.

Lauren is a graduate of The Second City's Conservatory and Writing programs. She received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and her M.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University where she was the recipient of the Mary Marlin Fisher Playwriting Award and the Jean & Samuel Elgart ACS Legacy Fellowship.
