CLASS DESCRIPTION

“When talking isn’t enough, you sing.”

What are the limits of colloquial language? What are the limits of moving through time vs. how time expands or collapses? How can the two blend and what makes the blend successful? In this class, we define what makes a poem itself, what makes a play itself, and how the two combined to make theatricality out of language.

This Is the Class for You if You:

  • Are interested in poetry and heightened language in service of stories for the stage.
  • Are a poet interested in transition to playwriting
  • Are interested in playing with language

What to Expect:

  • Sharing ideas and short excerpts with heightened language
  • Reading and writing in class

NOTE FROM GESTHSEMANE

This subject is important because poet-playwrights are some of the most eminent creative playwrights around. From Donja Love to PWC alum August Wilson, finding a new entryway into language allows creativity beyond the naturalistic.

While sitting in my MFA class on structure, I began to tune out and dream my own class, one that combined poetry's creativity with playwrighting's relationship(s) with time. I love these two mediums and hope to share that love with you.
