“But when you hear an audience scream as one, night after night, and sometimes see them shaking in the street afterwards, you realise that horror on stage is something very special indeed and something that cinema cannot get close to.”— Andy Nyman

Just in time for Halloween, this workshop with Jerome Fellow Courtney Meaker discusses different theories of horror: spectre of Other, Final Girl, Monster Theory, etc. Learn how to effectively implement for the stage the story that interests you. How do we take our own anxieties and fears and make them into something that's deeply interesting to watch and also scary? Other topics of conversation will include moving away from the jump-scare of movies, the importance of sound and light, propulsive storytelling, and how to write these elements into your draft.

This is the Seminar for you if:

  • You've always wanted to write a scary play
  • You love the horror genre
  • You want to know the difference between horror for stage and for screen

PostScript: A couple years ago, Courtney wrote a show that included lines and stage directions about only female-identified characters. The one-person show triggered a national conversation about the depiction of female characters onstage.
