As O-1 (the titular Alien of Extraordinary Ability) awaits her work visa, she finds herself in limbo with other visa hopefuls, some of whom have been trapped in this waiting room for decades.
As O-1 confronts the hierarchy of the U.S. immigration system, the world outside implodes, turning the tables of who is in power. At once surrealist and timely, Alien of Extraordinary Ability asks us to consider how we decide who belongs, and on what terms.
ALIEN OF EXTRAORDINARY ABILITY came out of my frustration with the American immigration system. There is no such thing as starting over in the land of the free. You are evaluated based on your past, your family, your home country, and a host of other factors that are out of your control. With Playwrights’ Center, I am honored and excited to explore this play further and push the boundaries of theatricality.
This is an online event. Online readings are recorded, edited, and made available to view for one week after the in-person readings take place. The video will be available to view at any time during the week from March 3-9.
