Class Type: Before the Play, Class Level: All Experience Levels Welcome
"We had to create a viable play, rather than just try to put the novel on its feet [...]. In a play you cannot afford to pause and reflect: you want people to be sitting on the edge of their seats. It’s a completely different dynamic.” - Mike Poulton
We are drawn toward adaptation for a variety of different reasons, but in any scenario, we are faced with the challenge and gift of riding the energy of an already existing work and creating a new shape for it to tell the story we want to tell. In this Seminar with Casey Llewellyn (18-19 Jerome Fellow), we’ll explore concrete strategies of working with source material and making decisions to support the adaptation only you can write.
This is the Seminar for you if:
- You want to adapt an unfamiliar classic
- You want to continue or change a conversation via a play
- You are interested in the power of live theater
PostScript: One of Casey's plays include an adaptation of the 1997 book I Love Dick, a book which now has been adapted for a TV series on Amazon Prime.
