While story and character get all the attention, the way we structure our plays can have a sneakily profound impact on the audience’s experience. Rather than treating structure as a natural outgrowth of how story develops, this workshop will start with a shape and ask what kinds of stories can fit inside. Playwrights will be asked to bring an example of a structure they admire in another work—be it a novel, essay, rock album, poem, or anything you can describe the shape of. No examples from theatre or film, which feature structures that playwrights have already internalized.
