“For me, the word ‘writing’ is the exact opposite of the word ‘waiting.’ Instead of waiting, there is writing."

    —Roberto Bolaño

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This workshop is designed for the beginners interested in learning the fundamentals of dramatic writing for the stage. Great as both a beginner or refresher course to learn, develop, and implement the basic tools for writing quality original dramatic narrative for the stage. This workshop environment will encourage you to get your ideas on the page to produce a first draft.

This is the class for you if you:

  • Are a new or beginning playwright.
  • Are an intermediate playwright who want to sharpen your skills in the realm of dramatic writing.
  • Are interested in developing skills that will translate not only to the stage, but to TV and film.
  • Want to finish a play you're currently working on or haven't yet started.

Important Things to Note:

  • This class will be using Google Classroom. Therefore, you must have or create a Gmail account to fully participate in the class.
  • Participants can expect to learn these fundamentals through lecture, in-class discussion, in-class writing exercises, personal writing at home, and by engaging with the other participants in guided in-class writing workshops using artist-driven critical response techniques.
  • Because this is an intro class, it will stick to traditional dramatic structure and principles.
  • Payment plans are available as needed. Please contact Membership Programs Associate, Alayna Jacqueline Barnes, to discuss payment options.

NOTE FROM MARVIN

This class aims to encourage beginning playwrights to finish plays they are currently working on or plays yet to be written by giving them the skills, knowledge, and confidence to follow through on their vision.
