ONLINE SEMINAR: Rebounding from Rejection: Why Do We Do This, Again?
SEMINAR DESCRIPTION
As playwrights, we all know the feeling of sending our best work into the world—only to be met with a “no thanks” or, worse, no response at all.
The good news? You’re not alone. Rejection is something every writer faces. The question is: how do we navigate the disappointment without getting stuck, discouraged, or tempted to give up altogether?
In this seminar, we’ll explore strategies for submitting work more effectively, learn how to interpret rejection letters, and do some reflective writing about our creative lives. Most importantly, we’ll remind ourselves why we keep coming back to the page—and that we’re in this together.
This seminar is for you if you:
- Feel discouraged by rejection or silence after submitting your work.
- Are looking for support and community in navigating the ups and downs of playwriting.
- Want to strengthen your submission strategy and better understand how to interpret responses.
- Need a creative boost to reconnect with your passion for writing.
- Are interested in learning more about Gemma’s work and approach to writing.
What to expect:
- Practical tips for submitting your work, with a focus on strategy over volume.
- Actionable tools for handling rejection and staying creatively resilient.
- A supportive space to reflect on the emotional ups and downs of the writing life.
- A sense of community and shared experience as we talk honestly about challenges and perseverance.
- A couple of guided writing prompts to reconnect with your voice and purpose.

Having a healthy relationship to rejection has helped me stay focused on what’s important in my writing, career, and life. Each rejection forces me to come back around to my reasons for doing this in the first place, which are not about success, fame, glory, certainly not money – and more about connection, expression, compassion, and curiosity.
