COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In this game writing masterclass, you will learn the basic tenets of game writing, noting in particular how these differ from traditional strategies used to write plays or screenplays. We will look at some modern games and discuss the different tools and strategies they use for communicating story. Then, as a writer, you will flex new storytelling muscles via a series of writing exercises and challenges. In the end, you will leave this masterclass with a draft of a short text-based game or interactive fiction, as well as several written samples that can serve as the start of your own game narrative portfolio.

This intensive is for you if you:

  • Are you interested in interactive world-building for gaming
  • You’re looking to develop interactive or narrative game projects.
  • Are prepared to engage in collegiate-level work and assignments 
  • Are interested in learning more about Whitney’s work and approach to writing.

Requirements

  • Students need to have written at least one complete full-length play.
  • Students need command of and confidence with basic playwriting and/or screenwriting principles
  • Students need a basic understanding of contemporary video games.

Course Objectives & Outcomes:

  • An introduction to foundational principles of game writing and interactive storytelling.
  • Hands-on writing exercises and prompts to guide your creative process.
  • Exposure to basic, free software used in creating text-based games and interactive fiction.
  • Step-by-step support as you begin building your own short interactive narrative.
  • Access to additional resources for continued learning beyond the course.

Whitney Rowland is a Minneapolis-based playwright, screenwriter, and game writer, and a current Core Writer at the Playwrights' Center. She currently writes for Quantic Dream and has previously worked with Red Storm Entertainment, Ubisoft Quebec, and Ubisoft Shanghai. You can see her writing in the AAA game titles ASSASSIN'S CREED SHADOWS and AVATAR: FRONTIERS OF PANDORA. Whitney’s plays have been developed at the Last Frontier Theatre Conference, Mid-America Theatre Conference, Kennedy Center American College Theater Festivals, Great Plains Theatre Conference, and PlayPenn, where she was named a 2019 Haas Fellow. Her work has been produced at Here's the Exit Theatre Co, Synchronicity Theater, Pittsburgh New Works, Northwest Children’s Theater, and colleges around the country. Whitney has a Bachelors from the University of Kansas and MFA from Carnegie Mellon.
