About the play

Food is scarce, and Alfie has grown up in a clan of justice warriors, hunting and eating the rich. His worldview is thrown into question when he meets Clara, a member of a clan with different dietary habits. As Alfie questions everything he thought was true, he sparks a reckoning in his mother Sheena – leader of the Cannibals. Can the matriarchs of each clan find a path forward that ensures their survival, with their full humanity intact? Eat the Rich is a revenge fantasy, an interrogation of wealth and human value, and a comedy about how we change our minds.

From Gemma

This play came from a place of rage. Childcare is unaffordable. Housing is unaffordable. Groceries are eating up more of my paycheck than ever before. And then I read about a group of wealthy vacationers on a cruise chipping off part of an iceberg near Greenland to put in their cocktails—at a time when melting icebergs are causing climate disasters—and I lost it. Once you start noticing all the ways the super-rich are ruining this planet for the rest of us…you can’t stop.

But this is also a play about the human potential for change and transformation. Most of us would do anything to stay alive, or to keep our children alive. But then, once we’ve made it, we have to come to terms with all the things we did to survive.
