"Working with artists outside of the 'field' of theater is constantly challenging me not to get comfortable, and pushing my work into different places that I wouldn’t have been able to anticipate."-Rachel Jendrzejewski

In this session, Rachel (2017 - 2018 McKnight Fellow) will offer some best practices for playwrights interested in developing new work with artists of other disciplines, such as musicians, dancers, and visual artists. This seminar will NOT address integrating these disciplines into existing plays (e.g. working with designers to bring a script to life); instead, participants will focus on horizontal development processes in which artists of different disciplines (including writers) create original work together from the ground up and share authorship.

Topics covered will include finding collaborators; defining terms and establishing shared vocabularies; creating structures and ground rules; approaches to writing in collaboration with other artists (including both general strategies and specific exercises); and how this kind of cross-disciplinary practice overlaps with, yet also diverges from, actor-led devising processes in the field.

This is the seminar for you if:

  • You are curious about incoporating other artistic mediums into your work
  • You like the idea of creating as a part of a group
  • You are looking for some basic guidelines on the "work" of collaboration

PostScript: Rachel's play encyclopedia was recently published and is available from Sprout Press. You might remember this play from last year's Ruth Easton New Play Series.

Playwrights of all experience levels welcome.
