Letter from the Producing Artistic Director
In the 2013-14 season we developed nearly 70 bold and profound new plays, some of which have already been slated for production, including Mat Smart's The Royal Society of Antarctica (The Gift Theatre, Chicago), Gabriel Jason Dean’s Terminus (Vortex Rep, Austin), and Carson Kreitzer's Lasso of Truth (Marin Theatre Company, CA; Synchronicity Theatre, Atlanta; Unicorn Theatre, Kansas City, MO).
We also worked on several co-development partnership projects and welcomed many visiting artistic leaders to the Center to get to know our writers’ work. Applications to our fellowship programs increased by 11%, and we also saw increases in membership and audiences attending our public readings.
Administratively, we achieved a significant budget surplus that allowed us to bolster our operating reserves, retained 100% of our staff, and undertook a major rebranding and website development project.
You can scroll through lots of fun numbers and stats below, but it’s the people who really make the Center what it is. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support of the Playwrights’ Center and the 1,550+ writers we serve each year. You are helping to bring new and innovative work to the American theater!
